Alcosuisse and the rabbinate of the Israeli Religious Community in Zurich (IRGZ) have been successfully working together for over 20 years, and can look back on a long-standing and sound foundation of trust. Rabbi Chaim Moshe Levy and Abraham Solowiejczyk are our contacts concerning kosher and Passover issues. During its visit on 13 January 2012, Alcosuisse was able to gain a deeper insight into the business of the IRGZ, and both partners had the opportunity to present and explain their views. Moreover, Alcosuisse benefited from a valuable transfer of knowledge on kosher and Passover certification.

During this meeting, Alcosuisse was once again clearly shown the significance and importance of the market for kosher and Passover-quality items.

RSB recognized by the European Union as proof of compliance with the Renewable Energy Directive!

Lausanne, 19 July 2011 ? Today the European Union recognized the standard and certification system of the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels (RSB) as a way to demonstrate and document compliance with the EU biofuels mandate. Biofuels entering the EU market must demonstrate environmental benefits compared to fossil fuels in order to count toward the mandate established under the Renewable Energy Directive (2009/28/EC). Qualifying biofuels feedstocks must avoid harm to land with high biodiversity value or high carbon stock. In addition, biofuels must demonstrate a 35% saving in GHG emissions compared to fossil fuels.

Some 500 representatives of the ethanol sector ? including Alcosuisse ? from over 50 countries attended the 13th F.O. Licht's World Ethanol Conference, which took place in Geneva from 2 to 5 November 2010. The main topics were the development of global ethanol production and sustainability efforts regarding bioethanol.

F.O. Licht's World Ethanol Conference brings together ethanol producers, oil majors, traders, banks, investors, biotechnology companies and the media. The event is an ideal opportunity for Alcosuisse, an ethanol importer and trader, to cultivate contacts with its suppliers, network and extend its knowledge of the ethanol market.

Higher world market prices expected

Aside from the sustainability of bioethanol, the development of the world ethanol market was the top theme at the 2010 World Ethanol Conference.
In 2010, ethanol production costs were around 42% higher than at the start of 2009. The reasons for this can be found in Brazil, the world's largest producer of sugar cane. At the same time as the Brazilian real appreciated, a period of drought caused harvest losses. Moreover, the production of sugar competed with the production of ethanol due to the record sugar prices.

Consequently, the majority of conference attendees expect prices on the world ethanol market to continue rising.
