The chemicals industry uses ethanol as a solvent or as a starting product in chemical reactions. The technical products industry needs the substance for producing detergents, paints, varnishes, anti-freeze and explosives.

Chemicals

The following types in particular are used in the chemicals industry:

  • F25-A ethanol, second grade made from agricultural raw materials (F25-A)
  • A15-A first-class quality of absolute ethanol (A15-A)

Depending on the procedure, the residual water content which has azeotropic qualities is unwanted (ethanol content, at least 96.11% vol.). The A15-A (maximum 0.2% water) is a grade from which the water is also removed after distillation. It is used when the ethanol should contain as small an amount of water as possible.

In addition, ethanol is particularly appropriate as a base substance in its use in the manufacture of perfume oils, which are subsequently used in the cosmetics industry.

Depending on its use, corresponding denaturants are added to the ethanol.

Technology

The following types are used in the technical products industry:

  • F25-A second-class quality of ethanol made from agricultural raw materials (F25-A)
  • A15-A first-class quality of absolute ethanol (A15-A)
  • S15 ethanol Sekunda denatured with 2% methyl ethyl ketone and 0.5% methyl isobutyl ketone (S15)

Ethanol is a valued solvent for oils, fats, resins and many colouring agents. Ethanol is particularly suitable as methylated spirits due to its high fuel value and for manufacturing gel fuel (especially the S15 grade). Ethanol is also particularly suitable for cleaning purposes and cleaning agents.

It is worth mentioning in particular the market for fireplaces which can be operated with ethanol as a fuel. These fireplaces do not need a chimney and are thus particularly appropriate for most rooms (in private homes, hotels, etc.). Alcosuisse sells a high-grade ethanol denatured with methyl ethyl ketone and Bitrex in disposable containers of 7.5 kg. This grade is made from agricultural raw materials or sugar extracted from wood (i.e. not to be confused with biological ethanol in line with the Organic Farming Ordinance).

Depending on its use, corresponding denaturants are added to the ethanol.
