Absolute ethanol has played an important medical role for centuries as a disinfectant for the skin and wounds. The pharmaceutical industry therefore uses it not only in the production of medicines, but also in large quantities in the manufacture of disinfectants.
The cosmetics industry uses ethanol in the manufacture of perfumes and personal care products.
Pharma
The following types in particular are used in the pharmaceutical industry:
- F15-A first-class quality of ethanol made from agricultural raw materials (F15-A)
- F25-A second-class quality of ethanol made from agricultural raw materials (F25-A)
- A15-A first-class quality of absolute ethanol (A15-A)
These ethanol grades meet the requirements of the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) and – thanks to the harmonised testing procedures – those of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP). Azeotropic compositions (min. 96.11% vol. ethanol) as well as absolute grades (min. 99.8% vol. ethanol) are used.
Depending on its use, corresponding denaturants are added to the ethanol.
Cosmetics
The following types in particular are used in the cosmetics industry:
- F15-A first-class quality of ethanol made from agricultural raw materials (F15-A)
- F25-A second-class quality of ethanol made from agricultural raw materials (F25-A)
- A15-A first-class quality of absolute ethanol made from agricultural raw materials (A15-A)
Ethanol is an ideal carrier for fragrances. The various ingredients in perfumes, deodorants, after-shaves, etc. can easily be diluted in ethanol. Generally, an F25-A or A15-A grade is sufficient. Depending on how precious a perfume is to be, for example, grade F15-A is used (or even E15-A extra-high quality ethanol made from agricultural raw materials). Such ethanol is virtually odourless.
There is a new trend toward increasing incorporation of organic ethanol (F15-BIO organic ethanol / see also specialities sub-section).
Depending on its use, corresponding denaturants are added to the ethanol.
