alcosuisse defines the term sustainability holistically, i.e. not only in ecological terms but also politically and socially. Core aspects include the careful handling of areas under cultivation and the richest possible biodiversity, fair working and employment conditions, political rights and up-to-date work-related and legal security. alcosuisse already attaches considerable importance to the fulfilment of these criteria. However, since there is still a lot of catching-up to do as regards sustainability in the ethanol trade, we want to be a pioneer in this field. Accordingly, alcosuisse, in collaboration with the renowned School of Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences (HAFL) at Bern University of Applied Sciences, has launched the "2020 Sustainability Vision" programme. The aim of this programme is to achieve an environmentally friendly, responsible and socially acceptable production and supply chain with seamless traceability. The involvement of the HAFL is designed to ensure a scientifically sound basis for the programme with verification by an external independent body.
